Why oak works in so many rooms
Oak has an open grain and a mid-tone color, so it hides dust and everyday scuffs better than very light or very dark floors. Its golden undertone warms rooms that receive cool, bluish daylight, and it is neutral enough to stay in the background while still giving the room character.
How to style it
- Keep walls in warm white or chalky neutrals so the grain can be seen.
- Add one saturated cool color: blue is the classic contrast to oak's warmth, whether on a deep blue wall or a blue accent chair.
- Layer with textured wool or linen rather than another wood tone.
What to watch for
Orange-leaning finishes can look stronger in low afternoon sun, so check a sample at noon and at dusk (more in Start with the light). Matte and satin finishes show fewer scratches than gloss.
