FLOORS / VOL. 01

The foundation of every room.

The floor is the largest surface you will live with, so start here. Compare three hardwoods by mood, light and upkeep.

Bright living room with honey-toned natural oak flooring and white walls

WARM, ORGANIC, TIMELESS

Natural oak

Natural oak is the floor that forgives: honey-toned, quietly grained and at ease with almost every wall color and furniture style.

Sunlight across light wooden floorboards in a room with large windows

AIRY, CALM, LIGHT-FILLED

Light ash

Light ash opens a room: a pale, softly streaked floor that bounces daylight around and makes compact spaces feel wider.

Dark walnut wood floor with a patch of sunlight beside a window

GROUNDED, RICH, EVENING-READY

Dark walnut

Dark walnut gives a room gravity: a deep, chocolate-toned floor that makes walls look lighter and evenings feel richer.

How to choose a floor

Think about the light first: small or north-facing rooms usually benefit from a lighter floor, while large bright rooms can carry a dark one. Then think about upkeep. Mid-tones hide wear, very light and very dark floors show more. Finally, choose the wall color and furniture that complement the floor, because color works best together (see color is never alone).

Still undecided? Read oak, ash or walnut for a side-by-side comparison.
