Oak, ash or walnut: how to choose a wood floor

Three popular hardwoods, three very different moods. Here is how to pick the one that suits your room and your life.

Wood flooring is a long-term decision, so it helps to compare the three Firnie floors on what actually matters day to day.

Color and mood

Natural oak is honey-toned and versatile. Light ash is pale and airy. Dark walnut is deep and dramatic. If you are unsure, oak sits in the middle and is the easiest to live with.

Light and room size

Small or north-facing rooms benefit from ash, which reflects more light. Large, bright rooms can carry walnut without feeling heavy. Oak adapts to both. Planning a small room? Start with ash.

Upkeep

Mid-tones such as oak hide scratches and dust best. Very light and very dark floors show more, so they suit households that do not mind a little maintenance.
